B & D Juniors

The Blackburn & Darwen Junior Band was formed in the early 1980’s by a number of dedicated helpers from the Senior Band. The aim of forming the band was to encourage children in the area to achieve a high standard of musical ability so that they would eventually become part of the Senior Band.

Gordon Clough conducted the first rehearsal, which was attended by 15 children of widely varying musical ability.

Alan Thomas became Musical Director in 1984 and brought with him a considerable number of children from the local schools. In 1987 a full set of instruments was donated by T.D.S Circuits of Blackburn and an intermediate band, the Blackburn & Darwen T.D.S Band, was formed.

We have around 90 members of the band organisation now. The Junior Band’s conductor is Dee Russell, who is also the Assistant Principal Cornetist of the Senior Band. Under her guidance the Junior Band has grown in number and improved in standard.
